Sinkhole update
By Franny Kretz
The sinkhole is fixed now, and the repaving is beginning. Luckily in the process of the sliding of the road and fixing it no one died. They have re-opened the highway lanes for the driving of your pleasure. The reimbursement of the Fireside Diner is still happening, suggest when the parking lot is repaved and the restaurant is reopened to go try their food. It's taken awhile to get the job done but we've almost reached an ending to this sinkhole madness. I know the pictures I've displayed are old but it gives you a feeling of relief knowing that you are just *that* much closer to driving on a newer safer road.
Mixed Breed Dogs or Pure Breed Dogs
by Elaina Doyle
Many people have asked this question, Pure breed or mutt? I have done immense research in search of the answer, but, in the end it is an opinion. I plan to help you make your decision. Pure Breeds: Positives: You always know exactly what your getting. The size, color and markings are known and you have a good idea of the temperament, intelligence and obedience level, though that can differ between individual dogs. Negatives: Pure breed dogs have very weak bloodlines. They are much more prone to sicknesses and diseases because pure breed usually means severely inbreed. This causes weak immune systems. Pure breed dogs have shorter life spans (on average) than mixed breed dogs.
Mixed breeds:
Positives: Mixed breed dogs are generally much more healthy than the average pure breed dogs. They are usually much cheaper than pure breed dogs.
Negatives: You're not completely sure what your getting.

Drawing
by Trinity Sayne
Drawing is enjoyable, stress-relieving, and is very beautiful. People often doodle which is a form of drawing, when they are bored or in deep concentration. You don't have to be an artist to draw or even know how to, you just put a pencil to a paper and start imagining them and write them on the paper in a picture. Drawing can be fun, you can make a game out of it where you draw a map-like object and have your friends follow the map and find the prize. Drawing can also make a tired dull mind into a very productive mind. Some people have natural artistic abilities and are able to draw faces of people with just a description of what they look like. This is useful when searching or suspects of a victims crime. Drawing makes people unique in their own way of drawing what they see and hear.

Phones Technically are Good

Phones, Good Or Bad? Hello Azalea! Hope you're having a fantastic day! What would make the day so much better is if we had the freedom to be on our phones in the hallways, I think it's a good idea because what if the school went into lockdown and the office phones got disconnected? The kids would need to use their phones to call 911 in an emergency. Or what if there was an emergency in your family? Parents will want to get ahold of there children as fast as possible and usually they know their kids number by heart and if they needed to get ahold of the school they would need to go through there contacts or look it up online. I think cell phones could also be bad because it could distract you from schoolwork. I think azalea needs to know about this because there are emergencies and if kids could use their phones we could save kids and some adults lives.

Some Animals Can’t Lick

Animals and Sea Creatures That Have No Tongues Have you ever wondered about the animals and sea creatures that didn't have tongues? Well you know... They eat too, without tongues. Just right now, try to think of all the animals and sea creatures that you think have no tongues. Well I know 1 animal and 3 sea creatures that have no tongues and I'm going to tell you them, also what they eat, without their tongue. The first one is a snail and they like to eat plants, fungi, and algae. Then, there are crabs; well crabs have to be 24 years old to go down into the deeper water with the adult crabs, then they start to eat worms, clams, mussels, snails, and sea urchins. Now the starfish is very different by the way the starfish eats its food. It gets out of its shell (starfish live in their shells) then grabs the prey and immediately digests the food then gets back into its shell with the food and eats it. The starfish can also use their water vascular system to force open the shells of clams, and mussels and wedge the prey's stomach into it own shell and then the starfish will just eat the prey. Now the jellyfish is one of my favorite sea animals and they eat many different types of things, such as small plants (phytoplankton) copepods (crustacean zooplankton) fish eggs and other small fish called larvae; Also eat planktonic eggs, young stages (also called larvae) they also eat many different marine animals. Wow see all of that food that feeds one animal or sea creature with no tongue? Did you ever know or think about this before I told you?

To Chew or Not to Chew – Gum!
Written by Riley
Serna Nov 12
Most students like to chew gum in school or classes and most students think it should be aloud in all classes but they aren't because some teachers don't like it because it can be a safety problem with like a science project or choking problem. Then there's the disrespect because students could dislike a teacher or just be rude and show disrespect and stick gum on the desk or in a bad place which teachers don't like gum. Most teachers think gum is okay because they want to show the students the respect that adults should have and to be treated like high schooler or young adults but it is a privilege to have gum and if it gets to be a big distraction or a mess which will have that privilege taken away. The administration will allow gum in our school but they say it is up to the teachers and there class room rules.

- Did you know that special song 12 days of Christmas? After singing that song it turns out you would get 364 gifts!
- The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.
- Mistletoe (Viscum album) is from the AngloSaxon word misteltan, which means “little dung twig” because the plant spreads though bird droppings.
- President Teddy Roosevelt, an environmentalist, banned Christmas trees from the White House in 1901 The Viking god Odin is one precursor to the modern Santa Claus. According to myth, Odin rode his flying horse, Sleipnir (a precursor to Santa’s reindeer), who had eight legs. In the winter, Odin gave out both gifts and punishments, and children would fill their boots or stockings with treats for Sleipnir

Intramural Program For AMS Students
by Alia Graves
A new after school sports program is coming soon to AMS! The Intramural Program will offer a range of sportsrelated activities for anyone interested in getting involved with Azalea's Athletic Department. Mr. Buell Gonzales, who will be the director of this program, generously offered more details on the Intramural. What exactly is this all about? "The Intramural Program will give students the opportunity to participate in a structured afterschool activity that promotes the goals of the athletic department," said Mr. Gonzales. "The program will teach the basic skills of the inseason sport and give the student opportunities for community service and develop skills essential for success in the classroom. "As of right now we are only doing Intramural basketball," he added, when asked about what games and activities will be available. "but the sports offered will change as the seasons change and more opportunities develop." The following application information for AMS Intramural Coach was recently released in Brookings' local newspaper, the Curry Coastal Pilot: • Applicant must have the ability to create efficient schedules. • Applicant must be able to work well with a large number of students, be organized, and communicate effectively. • The applicant must be able to demonstrate various physical activities associated with coaching a variety of sports. • The position would entail a commitment minimum of 3 days per week for practice and games. Mr. Gonzales reported that he has already received several applicants for the position, so it looks like the program is off to a good start. Mr. Gonzales description of Intramural sounds promsing: "FUN! This is an opportunity to be with friends and play games in a stressfree environment. We will meet 1 hour, 3 days a week to practice and play games. It will be a good opportunity to get out and have fun." Interested? Intramural will begin when school resumes after Christmas Break, and, according to the application in the Pilot, will last until February 19, 2016.
Black Friday Background Checks

This year there was the most background checks on record.Guns defently sold the most on Black Friday. This Friday had the highest number of background checks even for Black Friday. I'm average, than 500 gun background checks a day fail because of incomplete information that is required for a decision. That was information from the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System. They are responsible for checks on firearm purchases from federally licenced shops. According to the FBI, there has been more than 220 million background check requests for fun purchases since 1998. It is a fedaral law for gun dealers that have a Federal Firearms License require background checks for all sales. The National Criminal Background Check System processed 185,345 requests on black friday according to the FBI'S report. It was an approximate 5 percent increase over the 175,754 received in Black Friday in 2014. Now the second highest background checks was on December 21, 2012.

Azalea Middle School is holding a food drive to benefit our local food bank. The food drive is not limited to canned foods, and students may bring in any food if it is in a sealed container. Think boxes of cereal, even those little individual cups of macncheese, and similar food items. The drive will last November 2nd13th. Teachers should have a box for students to turn food into in their advisory class. This annual event is coordinated by Mrs. Volz's leadership class. There is currently no planned award for the advisory with the most food.

Christmas in Australia falls in the middle of summer, but we have Christmas in the middle of the winter. During the holiday time in Australia it is very busy buying gifts for their family and friends.Store windows are full of toys, displays of fake snow, reindeer, and icicles. We eat roast, turkey, ham, and pudding during Christmas time. In Australia families have an outside BBQ. The Boxing Day public holiday is the day after Christmas day every year. In Sydney sailors from around the globe compete. In South Australia it is called Proclamation Day. Sports are a big part of this public day. Summer is also cricket season in Australia. The traditional Boxing Day Test Cricket match held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground attracts more than 100,000 people. Boxing day is also when there is bargains and sales for stores in most cities and towns.

In 1971 Oregon became the first state to ban the use of nonreturnable bottles and cans. The law is credited with reducing litter and increasing container recycling. As a result, items which used to make up around 40% of roadside litter now represent about 6%. Formed more than 6,500 years ago, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. It is the only lake to be formed in the remains of a volcano and its crystalblue waters are known around the world. The Tillamook Cheese Factory is the largest cheese factory in the world Oregon’s state flag is the only state flag to carry two separate designs, with a beaver on its reverse side Mill Ends Park in Portland, the world’s smallest official park, measures two feet across.
